Publish Time:2017/9/8 18:02:01

The benefits of the wireless internet are undeniable. Setting up your own wireless network is quite easy if you have the following: a wireless router, a modem, a PC or laptop. If you have all of these let’s see how we can set up a wireless network.

Step 1: Connecting the modem and the router

Connecting all the devices needed for a wireless network the right way is critical. At the beginning, you have to connect the cable or phone cable from the wall to the modem. After that take an Ethernet cable and connect the modem and the router. Generally, the port you have to connect this cable to is colored differently.

Step 2: Switch on the modem and the router

The first device to be switched on is the modem. You will have to wait a few minutes for the modem to boot up properly. Wait till the “online” light stabilizes and you can proceed. If there is no light labeled “online” on your modem, wait a little before continuing. The next step is to switch on the router. You also have to wait till it boots completely and all the lights stabilize. You can always check the user manual to see what these lights mean.

STEP 3: Connect the PC to the router

Finally, you can connect the router and the PC or laptop. Use an Ethernet cable for this too. When you see the Ethernet port you will recognize it immediately. The ports on the router are labeled as LAN. If you have done everything right the PC or laptop will connect to the Internet in a minute.  This is the time when you have to check your internet connection by visiting a few websites. In case your browser doesn’t load any of the websites you have to check these two options.

  • Maybe you have setup everything correctly, but the router is configured to start its own page initially.
  • The router or modem are not online. Switch off and on all your devices and check again. If it’s not working now, you will have to contact your ISP.

STEP 4: Login to the router settings

If you have connected to the internet successfully you have to make some changes to the router configurations like firmware upgrade, setting up wireless network name and password, and so on.

you have to log in to the router first. You can easily do this using the default router IP address, username, and password. These login details can be found in the user manual or printed on a label which is usually placed under the router itself.

STEP 5: Update your router firmware

Although this step is not necessary, especially if you are setting up a new router it is recommended to do it. By doing so you will fix some of the existing flaws of your router and possibly add some new features.

STEP 6: Setting your SSID or Wireless Network Name

By default, the router has a network name the same as the router brand. This has to be changed due to security reasons, mainly because the one who knows your router brand will easily find the default IP, username, and password. So, go to your router settings and change the network name. After you click Save you will see the new, updated network name on the list of available wireless networks.

STEP 7: Setting up Your Wireless Security

Securing your wireless network with a password is a must. You really don’t want everyone to be able to login to your network and use your bandwidth. At the same time someone might think it is funny to change your network name, router IP or login details. Believe us, it’s not funny at all because you will have to reset your router to factory settings.

So in the wireless security tab, you should choose WPA2 because this is one of the most recommended security options. Make sure to add a strong password there. It is wise to write down this password somewhere safe.

Final Words

If you have done everything right you are ready to use your wireless network with all your mobile devices. However, from time to time you won’t be able to connect your devices to the network and here is a great tip you can try – whenever you come in such situation restart your wireless router. Simply switch it off from electricity and turn it on again in a minute. In most cases, this will fix the networking problem you have.
